In the final analysis, the greatest of prophets could not effect a change in the hearts of his people. Moses could lead Israel out of Egypt; he could not accomplish a change in their basic tendency to spurn the Law of God. Someone infinitely greater than Moses would be given that task, someone eminently qualified to fulfill God’s promise to circumcise the stubborn heart of his people and all mankind (Deuteronomy 30:6).
